It was the crunch heard 'round the County as students simultaneously bit into apples.
OXFORD COUNTY - Kids around Oxford County are getting excited about nutrition at the Big Crunch!
A cheer of "Apples! Apples! Apples! Crunch! Crunch! Crunch!" rang through the gymnasium of Central Public School in Woodstock as approximately 260 students took part in a pep rally all about healthy eating featuring locally sourced apples.
Vice Principal of Central Public School Jason Schwartz says the kids were really exited to take part. "This is an annual event that we look forward to each year, and the Board of Health has been very gracious to come in time and time again to support us with our nutrition programs and today with the apples they are providing for the Big Crunch."
School Nutrition Program Coordinator Kelly Ferguson was on hand, dressed in her finest apple garb, to encourage kids to take a bite out of life. "It's really an opportunity to celebrate healthy eating and local produce and all the students will be crunching on an apple at the same time. They are from a local orchard in Tillsonburg."
Schwartz says programs like the big crunch and the nutrition program in general create a better learning environment for many of the kids. "We have parent volunteers who come in on a daily basis to provide nutritious snacks throughout the day to those who need it. It makes a big difference, especially to those who might have a full belly coming to school, and just that little bit of snack helps get them through the day."
