People across Oxford are sitting up and paying attention as Big Brothers Big Sisters puts out a call to action.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ingersoll, Tillsonburg, and Area have issued a challenge to the men of Oxford County.
Local men are invited to Sit Up and Start Something as the organization tries to find role models for more than 50 boys. Resource Coordinator Heather Brekelmans says they have a desperate need for Big Brothers right now.
"There is always fewer men that step forward for whatever reason. We have seen an uptake in the younger men coming out of post secondary, they have just started to realize that, 'Hey I am done school now and I finally have some time,' and they are doing that which is wonderful. Some of them just don't want to come out on their own so we have also seen a lot of couples matches start, where you and your partner are matched with a child together."
The campaign asks people to film themselves doing 50 sit ups, post that video to Facebook or Twitter with #50situpchallenge, and tag 5 men who would be great mentors.
"We encourage people to take a video of it, or to post a selfie, during or after, anything to say I just did it and then we also encourage them to tag 5 people, 5 men that they thought would be good role models. It doesn't mean that they are expecting those men to become mentors but the idea was that those people would either take the challenge to help spread the word that it is needed or would consider becoming a mentor."
