Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Ingersoll held their annual recognition evening last night, honouring their volunteers and corporate sponsors.
INGERSOLL - Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Ingersoll, Tillsonburg and District took time to honour their volunteers and corporate sponsors with their annual recognition evening Monday night.
Kierra Plunkett, a former little in the program, was given a $250 bursary for school and was presented with the Ryan Landon Memorial Award.
"I've been part of the program since 2006, and it's changed my life in many ways. It gave me opportunities to succeed in life, and it really broke me out of my shell so I wasn't so shy anymore, 'cause I used to hide behind my mom's leg all the time, and it just really impacted my life in more ways than one."
Current Big Brother Matthew Williams spoke at the event, saying that he has grown to know his Little, Daniel Destine, as more than just a little brother.
"You know, he is like a little brother to me for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, but he's now more of a lifetime kind of friend. I have a lot of buddies that hang out with Daniel now, like we all go climbing with each other. The biggest thing that I really noticed is that you kinda don't play that role as "mentor", but you're both kinda helping each other out developing in your own way."
Executive Director for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ingersoll, Tillsonburg and District Deb Landon explained why it is that they hold this ceremony every year.
"Tonight's recognition evening is a great opportunity for the agency to honour and recognize those volunteers and corporate people, and the community who support us throughout the year with our fundraiser events, with our agency activities, and just supporting our mentoring programs."
They had also presented Mary Tosland with the Mary Smith Memorial Award at the ceremony. You can see more photos from the event online here. (Photo's courtesy of Trish Roberts of Custom Concept Photography)
