The 'perfect storm of berry season' is upon us

WOODSTOCK - It's being called the 'perfect storm of berry season'. 

Fresh, local strawberries are hitting the markets and roadside stands with record size and sweetness. 

Co-owner of Red Barn Berries and Veggies in Woodstock, Sue Hilborn says this is the biggest crop of berries she has ever seen.

"The berries went into the winter really strong and we had a good snow cover. Fruit is gigantic. We didn't have a frost so all flowers are going to be developing into fruit and because we have had a lot of moisture, they are going to keep up a good size so it's really the year to fill your freezer."

Hilborn says the monster size seems to have enhanced the taste. 

"I don't know exactly why they are so sweet but a number of people have really commented on that, that have just bought some of the first berries that they seem sweeter than usual."

Hilborn says while the season started a few days late, it shouldn't negatively impact the crop. 

"Most berry seasons go about five weeks and I would think, unless we have an awful lot of 30 degree days, it will probably go into that fifth week. It's about four weeks from the time a flower develops until you have a ripe berry and some of our berries are still in flower so it would leave you to believe that it would have a good five week season that would take us well into July."
