Riley was 7 months old when she got her heart transplant, this year she will be celebrating her Grade 8 Graduation and heading to high school in Woodstock in September.
WOODSTOCK - April is be a donor month and you will notice booths set up inside the Woodstock hospital promoting organ donation.
Volunteer with the Trillium Gift of Life Network Joanna Mitchell says an organ donor saved her daughters life with a heart transplant when she was 7 months old.
"Riley is now 13 years old and she wouldn't be here today, if it wasn't for the fact that another family said yes to organ donation and given her the chance to grow up into a beautiful young lady."
Mitchell says they are thankful every day for that person who chose to be organ donor.
"This morning when I woke up, I was helping our daughter Riley get ready, she is having her grade 8 graduation photo's done today and all I could think to myself is wow, this milestone that she has reached, she is going to be graduating grade 8 and going to High School next year, we would have never been able to see that happen if it wasn't for that donor family that made that decision that day to save her life. We just want everyone to know that it is truly a gift, it is really something we want to you think about."
One donor can save up to 8 lives through organ donation and enhance the lives of up to 75 more through the gift of tissue. Your current or past medical history does not prevent you from registering to be a donor. Individuals with serious illnesses can, sometimes, be organ and/or tissue donors. Each potential donor is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
You can read more about organ donation and find out how to register online here.
Also on Sunday everyone is encouraged to wear Green to commemorate the one year anniversary of the Humboldt Bronco's bus crash and to raise awareness for organ donation.
