Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oxford County is celebrating International Mentoring Day. The day is meant to shine a light on what mentoring means across the world.
OXFORD COUNTY - A National Day is being made local.
Manager of Communications for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oxford County, Liz Wismer-Van Meer has the details.
"Today is International Mentoring Day. The month of January we celebrate Mentoring Month along with Mentoring Canada. This is a time when we put a spotlight on what mentorship means, not only here in Oxford County, in Ontario, but across Canada."
The focus for the day is filling "The Mentoring Gap," with a theme of "Guide the way. Mentor today."
Wismer-Van Meer says it is amazing to see how mentorship works.
"We look at measurable impacts that these young people have. So, they might not only see in their social wellbeing, they are going to see it in their education, it is kind of widespread, the benefits of mentorship."
In Oxford County, Big Brothers Big Sisters has a waitlist of 170 young people, and that ranges from Plattsville to Thamesford, Norwich, Courtland, Innerkip, and so on. Some of the youth have been on the list for two or more years waiting to be matched.
Wismer-Van Meer says at BBBS of Oxford there are 11 different programs, which all deal with mentoring.
There will be an information session held on January 30th starting at 6:00 p.m., which will give interested people a chance to find out what it would take to become a mentor.
You can find all the information by visiting the Big Brothers Big Sisters website.
