Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ingersoll, Tillsonburg, and area is looking for volunteers to make their in school programming possible. They are looking for 'bigs' to help with the one on one mentoring and the Go Girls programs.
Executive Director Deb Langdon says the time commitment is fairly minimal at just one hour a week for one on one mentoring, but it means so much to the kids.
"So there is no contact outside the school year so that's attractive to some people because it doesn't take up their weekends, or their summer holidays, or their Christmas. But they can still make a difference. And it's a great way for employers to encourage their staff to get involved in the community as well."
Langdon says this is a great chance for employers to offer flex hours at the office so their employees can take part.
The Go Girls program is a little more time intensive due to some training beforehand.
These programs help build confidence, self esteem, and academic skills and Langdon says for some of these kids it can make all the difference.
"I've been involved for many many years in this program and I've seen kids graduate out of it and they go back to class feeling so much better about themselves. You get to play board games, and do crafts, and you can go to the gym or go outside, and bake."
They are also looking for mentors for their Literacy Mentoring programming at local libraries outside of the regular school day.
