Buying cigarettes for underage youth is illegal.
OXFORD COUNTY- Oxford County Public Health wants people to stop buying cigarettes for underaged youth. As a result Public Health in partnership with Central East Tobacco Control Area Network have started the 'Bad Ways to Be Nice' campaign to raise awareness to reduce the trend. According to Public Health 12 per cent of Oxford County youth between the ages of 12 to 18 have admitted to being a smoker. What stands out is that the majority of them say they get their cigarettes from a social source- someone close them; a friend, parent or sibling.
Oxford County Public Health, Tobacco Control Coordinator, Gemma Urbani says that there are consequences for the supplier and the youth recieving the cigarettes. "I think everyone knows that you shouldn't be providing cigarettes to young people because a) it's illegal and b) it just starts someone on the path of addiction."
"The campaign is targeting the message to young adults so people old enough to buy cigarettes who are supplying them to teenagers not old enough to buy cigarettes."
In cooperation with Middlesex London Health Unit, Bads Way to Be Nice created a video depicting young children approaching people to buy them cigarettes. The result may surprise you.
