Woodstock Fire remind residents they need a permit for a backyard fire pit
WOODSTOCK - Warmer weather and long weekends always mean the return of campfires.
Plenty of people will be ready to take advantage of last years approved bylaw for open-air burning, something which Public Information Coordinator with Woodstock Fire, Lisa Woods says still needs to be cleared with the Department first.
"There is a bylaw in place and you do have to have a permit. It's free. It's the season when people want to have backyard fires so give us a call. There's a few forms to fill out and I do have to come by the property to issue the permit."
Woods says you need four metres from your property lines and any combustible structure or object to be able to have an open fire pit in the first place -- and that's just for homeowners, Woods adds that renters will have an additional form to fill out as well.
Woods, says a fire risk around something as simple as outdoor cooking is often overlooked.
"Cooking is the number one cause of fires so we want to make sure that if they are having festivities and things that they have one person who is in charge of the cooking and staying with it."
That means making sure the person cooking is sober, and keeping kids away from hot spots and campfires.
