WOODSTOCK - A local photographer has started a back to school safety campaign.
Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch and his kids took part in the campaign today. Birtch says it's a great time of year for back to school safety reminders.
"When Penny approached me about what she is working on, I thought this was a great initiative for the entire community to have reminders this time of year. We want to encourage all of our young people to get to school safely, whether that is on a school bus, using the City crossing guards or the junior crossing guards from the schools. We have had a lot of discussions over the past couple of years, including installing new cross walks here at Central School as a starting point, in addition to that, signs that indicate how much longer it will take the young people to walk to school."
The photo's today were taken in front of Central Public School where new cross walks have been installed along with a fresh coat of paint. Penny Nowak with Walk in the Woods Photography explains why she started this campaign.
"I started this back to school series and the idea was back to school photo's without kids and I was trying to get a safety and awareness aspect at the same time. I contacted Mayor Birtch and he was happy to help and we are talking about safety of dropping off kids, using cross walks, active transportation, not parking in no parking zones, everything related to back to school safety for our kids."
