Oxford OPP want motorists to think school bus safety as students head back to school this week.
OXFORD COUNTY -- Oxford OPP are ready for the return to school this morning.
Constable Stacey Culbert says officers will be monitoring our local roadways - watching for those failing to stop or trying to overtake stopped school buses. "We want motorists to be aware that the first offence you could be fined a minimum $400 to a maximum of $4000 and you could even be looking at jail for any subsequent offences, so it is a very serious offence."
The penalty section also levies 6 Demerit Points to a drivers licence according to Culbert.
Since January of this year, OPP have issued five fines in Oxford County while province-wide, roughly 1500 charges have been laid.
Vehicles approaching a stopped bus from the rear with its red signal-lights activated should stop 20 metres behind the bus and not pass until the signal-lights are turned off and the bus moves. The same goes for those approaching from the front of the bus.
OPP will not only be watching for motorists failing to stop or overtaking school buses; according to Culbert officers will be closely monitoring Community Safety Zones. "During peak hours for those Community Safety Zones, especially with school buses out there, any of those offences will have increased penalty. The reason being for these Community Safety Zones is to reduce the speed because generally speaking, as soon as we leave our city limits we look at the speed limit as being faster but that's not the case when there is a school zone or an area where there's going to a high volume traffic of people including pedestrians."
