Oxford OPP preaching ATV safety after a tragic weekend.
Oxford OPP are once again preaching off road vehicle safety after a fatal year on ATV's.
10 people have died so far in 2015 while riding an ATV with the most recent case happening in Huntsville last weekend. Also last weekend just next door in Norfolk County two people were injured in separate ATV crashes including a 13 year old boy who suffered serious injuries. Oxford OPP Constable Stacey Culbert tells Heart FM the police really want to preach safety when riding the machines and emphasize that they are not a toy.
"We have to realize that the machines need to be treated with respect and can cause serious injury, bodily harm and even death in some circumstance, they are heavy, heavy machines and should not be looked at as a toy."
Culbert says if you let the kids ride the machines, they need to be supervised and you should always be wearing a helmet and never operate the machine while impaired. She also says it is important to go over basic safety messages with your kids.
"Knowing how to understand what speed does, it won't allow you to turn the machine properly if your going to fast, and then taking a trip around your property to show them what the potential hazards could be whether there is a ditch or a ravine or something along those lines."
