Taking a stand against poverty. That's what a class of Grade 6 students are doing at St. Patrick's Elementary School in Woodstock. Mr. MacDonald's class produced a mini-documentary for a TVO contest called "Poverty in 5", which delivers a strong message about poverty in less than 5-minutes. The Woodstock students are now in the final 5, and need your votes to get their video broadcast on TV Ontario. Student Angelica Batog explains how they got started on the idea for their video. "We've been doing some stuff about space and just how much money we spend on just going into space and travelling. And then we look back here and we found out that we could use all that money to help out with poverty." Lucas Dempsey, who plays a strong role in the film, agrees with the message. "We should raise awareness for poverty and stop spending money on certain things and start spending money on kids without homes." Student Jemma-Rose Bender, who helped in directing and editing with the video, encourages you to check it out. "They can watch our video and learn about poverty so that maybe one day they can make a difference." If their video is chosen it will be broadcast on TVO, the kids will receive a pass to the Hot Docs Film Festival, and a day-long mentorship session with TVO featured film-maker Shelley Saywell. While the opportunity to learn more about producing videos would be a great opportunity, Batog says they've already learned a lot. "I learned how to edit, use a green screen, and it's just really a fun learning experience." You can view their video below, and click here to vote in the contest. Voting ends March 18th.
