Quebec swimmer Ilya Kharun won bronze in the men’s 200m butterfly.
PARIS - It was a great day for Team Canada at the Paris Summer Olympics.
We won another medal yesterday with 19-year-old Ilya Kharun of Montreal getting the bronze in the men’s 200m butterfly. This is Canada's first Olympic medal in the event and Kharun is the first Canadian man to win an Olympic medal in swimming since London 2012.
Team Canada has now won seven medals in Paris so far with two gold, two silver, and three bronze. As of 5:45 a.m. today, Canada was ranked ninth overall in the medal standings.
Meanwhile, the Canadian women's soccer team was able to keep their medal dreams alive yesterday after they celebrated a 1-0 victory over Columbia. Vanessa Gilles scored the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute, punching Canada's ticket to the quarterfinals and overcoming the six-point deficit the team was issued following the drone spying scandal.
The Canadians will now face Germany on Saturday.
HISTORIC MEDAL 🤩 (AGAIN!) Ilya Kharun has become the first Canadian man to win an Olympic medal in swimming since London 2012. #TeamCanada
