The SPCA says it's okay to give animals as a gift as long as everyone understands the responsibility attached to that gift.
If you're planning on bringing home a new furry friend this holiday season, the SPCA is asking you to think carefully and consider what that really means first.
Ontario SPCA Inspector Brandon James says they do have a lot of success stories of adoption during the holidays, but the most important thing is to make sure everyone who will be helping to look after that animal is involved from the beginning. "You have a previous conversation with them, making sure everyone is going to be around for the holidays to make sure the adjustment to the new environment works for the pet and the family. Making sure the family in the situation know the responsibilities this pet holds, not just for the holidays or until that kitten grows up but for the rest of the life of that animal."
It's important that when a child asks for, and receives an animal, they understand it's a commitment. "For instance you're getting a small pet for a child who really wants a rabbit or a rat or something like that, that they understand the responsibility that comes with it, not just when the fad is over, when the novelty is done. Which is why so many animals end up in shelters following the holiday," James says.
James says everyone needs to be clear about what they are willing to do from the very beginning. "Everyone involved is wanting to be involved and that any issues or things that may come up later are hashed out first before the decision is made. You know, it's going to continue to cost for spaying, neutering, microchipping, vaccines, and veterinarian checks for the coming years, but the responsibility to care for that animal is also there."
