Zorra Council supports saving small school
Zorra town council knows the importance of small, rural schools.
At their October 15 meeting, members from the Save AJ Baker group asked council to pass a motion requesting school closures in the township be stopped.
Mayor Margaret Lupton says she has never seen a group of people work so hard to save their school.
"They asked for our support and we had no problem with it. I mean we're not really people who can direct the school board any more than they can tell us what to do but it was more saying really, it's time to stop all the closing of schools and take another look."
AJ Baker is one of the schools under accommodation review by the Thames Valley District School Board.
Lupton says the group also came to council requesting support for a proposed Rural Education Centre they believe could be set up in the empty space a Zorra Highland.
Lupton says the idea is to use up the space at Zorra Highland so there is no room for AJ Baker students.
"It would be a centre, sort of like the outdoor centre, I think it's at Pittock where the children go and they walk through the bush and they catch frogs. This would be one that would talk about the rural lifestyle, perhaps teach children about growing gardens."
"When they came to council we didn't feel we really could deal with it when we found out they hadn't been to Highland Park yet. They wanted a recommendation from us because they thought this was a great thing but you can't sort of pit one school against another."
She also says the final decision would be up to the Thames Valley Board and she isn't confident there would be any money for a project like that.
