Filtrec Screening Incorporated was granted around $1 million in funding for an affordable housing project.
OXFORD COUNTY - County Council approved an affordable housing development proposal in Woodstock that will create 20 units.
Filtrec Screens Inc. plans to use the funds to repurpose the church into a mixed use residential building. Director of Human Services, Paul Beeton said a mixed use residential building helps reduce a density of people living on social assistance.
The approval was crucial to securing government funding for the creation of affordable housing. "When the ministry issued us the money we received notice of the money in December and the ministry wanted a confirmed project by January 31st to commit the funds to a project in Oxford County or the money would have to be returned to the ministry and the money would be reallocated to another municipality."
The creation of affordable comes at a time when the County's vacancy rate is extremely low especially for low-income housing. Beeton said the selection process was competitive, "there were 12 proponents that submitted and all of them were under consideration, there was over 8 million dollars in requests made for what effectively was a 1 million dollar envelope, so there's a willingness in the community's part to build affordable housing and it needs a financial commitment from all levels of government to make it happen."
Beeton adds that construction on the Riddell project has the ability to start tomorrow and believes demolition is already being done on the property.
