Taxi-related scams are becoming higher in the City of Woodstock.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police are warning residents about the rise in taxi-related card fraud.
It is being reported that unlicensed or fake taxi's are scamming riders out of their debit cards and in turn draining their bank accounts. Below are the steps that are taken by the scammers when it comes to getting a passengers card.
- A fake "passenger" may tell you that their cab won't accept their bank card, and ask if you can pay the fare using your debit card and in exchange, they’ll give you cash to cover the cost.
- The "taxi driver" says they only accept debit cards (no cash or credit).
- They insert your card into a tampered machine that records your PIN.
- They swap your real card for a fake one without you noticing.
- Your card is then used to withdraw or spend your money.
Police are saying these are the red flags people should be watching for in order not to become a victim.
- No visible taxi company markings or license
- Approached by "passengers" requesting to use your card in return for cash
- Driver insists on debit only
- Terminal is hidden or no receipt is provided
- Driver wants to handle your card
And lastly, here are tips you can use to protect yourself.
- Only use licensed taxis or trusted ride apps
- Tap or insert your card yourself, never hand it over
- Shield your PIN and double-check you get your own card back
- Use tap to pay whenever possible
- Set daily withdrawal limits to reduce risk
- Get real-time alerts by using your bank’s app
- Trust your gut, if something feels wrong, don’t go through with it
If you believe you have fallen victim to a scam, you should call your bank right away, report it to the Woodstock Police, and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
