A Christmas Visit

A visit from family can really lift the spirits for residents at Woodingford Lodge over the holidays.

OXFORD COUNTY - Family is important to everyone this holiday season, including those in long term care facilities.

"I believe that it's crucial," says Director of Long Term Care at Woodingford Lodge, Corrie Fransen. "It's important for families to visit. Bring their children, bring their pets, their favourite pet. Some residents may have pets that are still at home or the family pet. Just like you would do if you were going to visit people in their home to just make it a special Christmas."

"Join them for a meal -- that's wonderful. Bring gifts to wrap together and reminisce of when they wrapped gifts at home. The residents can help wrap gifts and talk about the things that they have purchased. Bring in some favourite food. You know how we all have a favourite food that we want at Christmas and reminisce. Listen to some old music."

Fransen says they have plans in place so no one is lonely this holiday season.

"If there are people who do not get family, whose family may be overseas, then certainly the staff make a special effort to ensure that they act as their family -- which we do for most of the residents -- but make it special for them as well to be their family here at Woodingford Lodge."

Fransen says Woodingford Lodge staff have been busy taking residents on the Tour of Lights, shopping trips and even planning a special indoor Christmas parade for the residents.
