The man who was wanted by Police for offering a teenager a ride to school has turned himself into police and it appears to be one giant misunderstanding.
PERTH COUNTY - Perth County OPP have located a man they initially thought was trying to lure young girls into his car.
Police say the man turned himself into police to let them know he was just trying to help and was not trying to lure children into his car. Further investigation from police verified his take on the situation. The man apologized for any anxiety this may have caused the victim, her family, the community and all other people involved.
Turns out a minor language barrier and cultural differences may have led to the mistaken perceptions according to police. The initial report came in from police after the man offered a young teenage girl a ride to school in Mitchell.
The Perth County OPP wishes to express their thanks to the community and local media outlets for their assistance in bringing this investigation to a successful close.
However they do want to stress that this incident serves as a reminder to parents to talk to your kids about stranger safety and how to react if someone offers you a ride.
"Education is the key and there are several discussions parents can have with their children regarding stranger awareness. One key element is to reinforce that children should never accept rides from strangers. One common tactic of child abductors is to lure children into a car using a fake story, such as telling kids they were sent by their parents who have been hurt in an accident. By establishing a “secret code word” system with your children, parents can better protect their loved ones. One of the single most important factors to remember when teaching your children about stranger danger is to instill confidence, rather than fear."
