A Norfolk County resident purchased $7,000 in Google Play Cards after falling victim to a computer scam.
NORFOLK COUNTY - Police are warning the public about a computer scam making the rounds that has already duped a local resident out of $7,000.
On Tuesday a person from Norfolk County received several calls from a man who told them their computer had a virus. Remote access was given to the scammer and the man accessed all of the victim's financial accounts and passwords.
The victim was then instructed to purchase approximately $7,000 in Google Play Cards from various stores while they caller stayed on the phone with the victim. After all the cards were purchased the victim then provided the male with the serial and identification numbers.
Police are urging everyone to hang up the phone if you should receive such a call. It's a SCAM.
Computer users are reminded, that unless you initiate the call, do not allow anyone access to your computer. Don't give out personal, banking or credit card information to anyone unless you are sure of whom you are dealing with.
Tips to protect yourself:
- Never download anti-virus software from a pop-up or link sent to you through an e-mail.
- Update your anti-virus software often and scan your computer for viruses regularly.
- Don't click on links or attachments in e-mails sent to you by someone you don't know.
- Turn on your browser's pop-up blocking feature.
- Never click on a pop up that claims your computer has a virus.
