After 3 meetings more time is going to be needed to finalize the 2016 budget for Oxford County
OXFORD COUNTY - There is still a lot of work left to do when it comes to the Oxford County budget for 2016.
The final of three special meetings was held yesterday, and Warden David Mayberry says the starting point was a 3.6% increase in the levy, and they are hoping to find things to cut back on.
David Mayberry says when they look at increasing the levy, the are looking more at investing in the future of the county. "I think a number of new initiatives particularly around Future Oxford and trying to move Oxford County forward. Also we're looking at a 1% increase in the amount of money we put into roads. We know that over the long term that we're actually sliding a little bit behind on roads and other infrastructure." In the past few year the increase has been lower than the rate of inflation.
"Staff are estimating somewhere close to $400 000 will be left over," Mayberry says when asked about last year's budget. "If you look at that, that's about 7% of the tax levy - 6 - 7% of the tax levy. That will be absorbed into reserves and then used in the next year to pay down expenses or to pay the ongoing budgets."
