WOODSTOCK - The 14th annual Oxford Youth Robotics Challenge is happening this afternoon.
20 teams of 5 made up of students from around the Province will design, construct, and problem solve with their teams while building and programming their robot out of a Lego Mindstorms Kit provided for an industrial-type task, the team will also document the project and submit a 10 minute video about the process.
Over 200 teams and 1,000 students from across the Province have competed in the competition in the past and all range from grades 7 to 12.
The Co-chair of the event Lisa Wells says it is a challenge for the kids but they always have fun with it.
"The teams will compete to create a robot for a predetermined challenge and they will also have to do a presentation and a written report, the robots will have to complete a challenge and whoever creates a robot the fastest or most efficient will be awarded points."
The students have learned many skills throughout the years the challenge has gone on including Teamwork, problem solving, and of course Robotics.
Since its inception more than 200 teams and nearly 1,000 students have competed in the skills competition from teams ranging from grades 7 to 12.
“Hands on experience is the best way to learn about all of the interdisciplinary aspects of robotics” commented one teacher in this year’s competition. “Working with robotics has been one of the best ways to engage students into STEM activities”.
