1-Week, 110 Hours, 1 T-Shirt

Shirts are on sale now for this year's "All's Fair Wear-a-thon". It's the second year for the event where many high school students, and anyone else interested in promoting fair trade will wear the same shirt for 110 hours in a week. Coordinator with Youth Unlimited in Woodstock, Dave Steenburg explains the significance of wearing a shirt for 110 hours. "The worst sweatshop I came across when I was doing my research had the workers at the factory for 110 hours a week. Every week they were required to do a 23-hours shift. When I came across that I thought 'How can we even imagine that?'." And so Steenburg believes wearing the shirt all week, for 110 hours, will give those people the appreciation of just how many hours those people are working. Steenburg says "If we can appreciate that, there are ways we can shop that keep sweatshops out of our wardrobe." Last year, over 200 people participated, mostly high school students. The shirt (pictured right) was designed by students Chris Andrews of Woodstock. The All's Fair Wear-a-thon goes the week of May 13th to the 19th. T-shirts are available now at Imogene's/WERCreations, 426 Dundas St. for $20. Proceeds support the development of a transitional housing program for youth at risk of homelessness in Woodstock.
